Songwriter Larry Sabiston was born in Southwestern Indiana in the city of Terre Haute, the birthplace of songwriter Paul Dresser, who wrote the successful long ago songs entitled "On The Banks Of The Wabash" and "My Gal Sal."

Larry showed a strong interest in music at an early age.  His mother said that at age three, Larry had memorized a couple of hit songs on the radio and would stand by the radio and sing them along with the radio singer.  He began playing the piano by ear and at age five he played "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder" at church.  (His first public appearance and his first experience at stage fright, he says.)

He later studied piano and played bass in the high school band.  The school had given a music aptitude test Larry scored well on it, so the band director, Violet Martindale, asked Larry to begin horn lessons and join the band.  Thus, she became a great help to Larry in music.  She also wrote some band marches and Larry marveled at her ability to write parts for each instrument and complete scores.

After graduation, Larry began a hobby of freelance writing, selling greeting card copy to Amberley Greeting Card Company, United Card Company, and Hallmark Cards.  He also sold articles and fillers to children's publications; among them Children's Playmate Magazine and some religious publications.  He also wrote four columns and drew cartoons for a small newspaper syndicate in Southern California.

After moving to the country west of Bloomington, Indiana, the home of Hoagy Carmichael, who wrote the famous song "Stardust" and many other hit songs, Larry began making lead sheets for local songwriters who couldn't write their music on paper.  It all began when a kindly 90-year-old Christian man said to Larry, "I wish I could find someone who could write down the notes of my song with the words on paper and make a lead sheet for me."  Larry not only wrote up a lead sheet but drew up complete sheet music of the song, free, for the kindly old man.

One of the local songwriters encouraged Larry to write some songs of his own.  Thus, he began songwriting and soon found his greatest satisfaction in writing gospel music, especially Southern gospel quartet songs, and children's songs about Jesus.

He says that singer/lyricist Peggy Lee was his greatest influence in music and songwriting, not only because he was drawn to the soft tone of her voice, but also because of her unique ability to feel and project the message and mood of a song so perfectly.  He became a fan-friend to Peggy and they corresponded from time to time.  Larry says that he always felt sort of honored that Miss Peggy Lee trusted him with her home address.

Larry says that Vestal Goodman and the Goodman Family, the Hinsons, and the Florida Boys were  also early influences in gospel music to him.

These days Larry continues to write Southern gospel songs and is currently writing songs for the Bibletones Quartet based in South Carolina.  He is thrilled to work with them and pleased that some of his songs are being played and sung in churches and concerts around the country.
